In light of recent political upheaval in South Korea, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba affirmed that bilateral cooperation with South Korea remains a crucial priority for Japan. This statement follows the ousting of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol by the country's Constitutional Court, which ruled against his controversial declaration of martial law.
During a session with a parliamentary committee, Ishiba emphasized the significance of Japan and South Korea working collaboratively to ensure regional peace and security. He noted that strengthening ties between the two nations is especially important this year, marking the 60th anniversary of the normalization of their diplomatic relations.
Relations between Japan and South Korea have historically been strained due to wartime grievances and territorial disputes. However, in recent years, particularly during Yoon's presidency that began in 2022, there have been signs of a thawing relationship. Ishiba pointed out that the urgency for trilateral cooperation involving the United States has heightened in response to North Korea's advancing nuclear and missile programs, as well as China's growing assertiveness in the region.
The Japanese Prime Minister stated, "Bilateral cooperation is essential for regional stability and peace, regardless of who leads South Korea." Following the Constitutional Court's unanimous decision to uphold the parliamentary impeachment, South Korea is expected to hold elections to select Yoon's successor within the next 60 days. Ishiba refrained from speculating on the outcome of these elections, emphasizing that it is ultimately up to the South Korean populace to choose their next leader.
As both nations navigate this political transition, the emphasis on cooperation remains a cornerstone of Japan's foreign policy in relation to its neighbor, reflecting a commitment to addressing mutual challenges and enhancing regional stability.
