Kei Nishikori, the Japanese tennis star, has expressed a sense of optimism as he prepares for his return to the Australian Open, marking his first appearance at the tournament in four years. The former world No. 4 has reported that he has regained about 80% of his playing form, following a series of injuries that have plagued his career in recent years.
Speaking to reporters at Melbourne Park, Nishikori noted that after getting back into the rhythm of his game last summer, he feels he is on an upward trajectory. He stated that he currently does not experience any significant pain, which gives him confidence in his ability to compete fiercely, regardless of his opponent.
Ranked 74th in the world, up from 106th after a strong performance at the Hong Kong Open, Nishikori has set his sights on improving his mental fortitude and overall performance during the 2025 season. He acknowledged the mental challenges he has faced in the past, particularly during matches where he has struggled with confidence.
Following hip surgery in January 2022, Nishikori has faced multiple fitness challenges, including issues with his ankle and knee. He has recently returned to competitive play but has dealt with shoulder pain that affected his serving ability. However, he is now in a position where he can focus more on his game without the burden of constant pain.
Nishikori has noted that the landscape of professional tennis has changed during his extended absence, with many new players emerging on the scene. He remarked that it feels as though he is starting anew, but he views this as an exciting challenge that he is eager to take on. He also mentioned the necessity of adapting to the evolving nature of the game.
Reflecting on his attitude towards competition, Nishikori shared that he has become more relaxed compared to his earlier years as a professional. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a balanced perspective on life and tennis, which has contributed positively to his overall mindset as he prepares for the Australian Open.
