Prince Hisahito of Japan Begins University Studies at Tsukuba
Prince Hisahito, aged 18 and the second in line to the Japanese throne, participated in the entrance ceremony at the University of Tsukuba, located near Tokyo, on April 5, 2025. This marks a significant milestone in the young prince's academic journey following his recent graduation from the affiliated Senior High School at Otsuka.
At the university, Prince Hisahito plans to explore his longstanding fascination with entomology, specifically focusing on insects such as dragonflies. Expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to engage in diverse academic fields, he acknowledged the mix of excitement and nervousness that comes with this new chapter in his life. He emphasized his intention to appreciate every moment of his university experience.
His parents, Crown Prince Fumihito and Crown Princess Kiko, expressed their hope for their son to have a rewarding university experience in a formal statement. Initially, Prince Hisahito will commute to the university from his residence at the Akasaka Estate in Tokyo. However, he may later transition to residing in a rented apartment near the campus in Tsukuba, Ibaraki Prefecture, depending on his academic schedule.
In September, the prince is set to celebrate his coming-of-age at a traditional imperial ceremony, marking his transition into adulthood at the age of 18. Following this event, he is expected to partake in various court engagements as a full-fledged member of the imperial family while prioritizing his educational commitments.
Traditionally, members of the Japanese imperial family have pursued their studies at Gakushuin University and its associated institutions in Tokyo. However, Prince Hisahito has charted a unique educational path, commencing his studies at Ochanomizu University Elementary School and continuing through Ochanomizu University Junior High School before completing his high school education at Otsuka. This represents a notable departure from the norm within the imperial lineage.
Notably, his cousin, former Princess Mako, made history by graduating from the International Christian University in Tokyo, followed by her sister, Princess Kako. The University of Tsukuba, which was established in 1973, had approximately 10,000 undergraduate students as of last year, and boasts a number of prominent alumni, including professional footballer Kaoru Mitoma, who currently plays in the English Premier League.
