Wakatakakage Triumphs Over Terunofuji as New Year Sumo Tournament Begins
The New Year Grand Sumo Tournament commenced with a surprising result as lone yokozuna Terunofuji faced an unexpected defeat against komusubi Wakatakakage at the Ryogoku Kokugikan arena in Tokyo. This match marked Terunofuji's return to competition after a challenging period due to injuries and health issues.
Terunofuji, who has struggled with chronic knee pain and diabetes, had participated in only two tournaments in 2024, both of which he won. However, his latest bout did not go as planned, as Wakatakakage executed a swift under-shoulder swing down, quickly sending the yokozuna to the ground. Historically, Terunofuji has had a favorable record against Wakatakakage, winning 10 of their last 11 encounters, making this defeat all the more poignant.
Following his victory, Wakatakakage expressed his focus on the tournament, emphasizing his preparation and positive mindset. This tournament marks his return to the top ranks after undergoing knee reconstruction surgery in April 2023.
In addition to Terunofuji's comeback, the tournament also features ozeki Kotozakura and Hoshoryu, both of whom are vying for promotion to the yokozuna rank. Kotozakura demonstrated his strength by defeating No. 1 maegashira Takanosho, showcasing patience and tactical skill as he awaited the right moment to force his opponent out of the ring.
Hoshoryu also secured a victory, grappling effectively against fellow Mongolian Kirishima and winning by force out after a failed leg-trip attempt by Kirishima. Meanwhile, another ozeki, Onosato, was unable to secure a win against No. 2 maegashira Tobizaru after being overwhelmed by a hand pull down.
This year's New Year Tournament promises to be an exciting event, with numerous competitors aiming for prestigious victories and potential rank promotions.
