A powerful earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale struck southern Taiwan shortly after midnight on January 21, prompting significant damage and injuring at least 44 individuals, according to local authorities. The earthquake occurred at 12:17 a.m., with its epicenter located in Dapu Township, Chiayi County, at a depth of 9.7 kilometers.

Following the initial quake, the region experienced multiple aftershocks throughout the early hours of Tuesday, raising concerns among residents and officials alike.

Among the worst-affected areas was the Nanxi district of Tainan, where approximately 100 homes sustained damage. Reports indicate that some neighborhoods faced interruptions to essential services, including electricity and water supply. Witness accounts from residents depict scenes of chaos and panic, with one individual describing waking up to a strong jolt and the unsettling smell of gas.

Local authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, as further significant aftershocks are anticipated in the coming days. An 87-year-old resident, currently seeking refuge at a local shelter, expressed fears over the ongoing seismic activity, stating a desire to avoid returning home.

The Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world's leading contract chip manufacturer, temporarily evacuated staff from its facilities in central and southern Taiwan as a precautionary measure. However, the company later confirmed that all operations had resumed normally.

As recovery efforts begin, officials are assessing the full extent of the damage across affected areas. Emergency services are working diligently to provide assistance and support to those displaced by the quake.
