Fatal Russian Attacks in Ukraine Claim Six Lives, Including in Kyiv
In a brutal escalation of violence, Russian forces executed a coordinated drone and missile assault on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, early Saturday morning, leading to the deaths of three individuals. Additional attacks in southern Ukraine resulted in three more fatalities, as confirmed by local officials.
During the pre-dawn hours, residents of Kyiv were jolted awake by powerful explosions as air defense systems were activated in response to the strikes. According to Timur Tkachenko, the head of the city's military administration, the attacks inflicted injuries on three others and caused significant damage to various infrastructures, including a shopping mall, a business center, a metro station, and water supply facilities.
Dmytro Lubinets, a parliamentary ombudsman, described the assault on social media, condemning the acts as emblematic of the aggressor's mercilessness. As the sun rose, rescue teams worked tirelessly in flooded streets, combing through wreckage, while remnants of missiles lay scattered among the debris.
Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Yuriy Ihnat reported that while both missiles aimed at Kyiv were intercepted, one was destroyed at low altitude, resulting in extensive damage to the city.
There was no immediate response from Russian authorities, who have consistently denied targeting civilian areas during their military operations.
In another incident, a missile strike in the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia resulted in the death of one person and injuries to eleven others, as stated by regional governor Ivan Fedorov. Additionally, Oleksandr Prokudin, the governor of the nearby Kherson region, reported that Russian shelling in a town north of the regional center also claimed two lives.
The Ukrainian military reported that they successfully intercepted 24 out of 39 drones and two of four missiles launched by Russia during the night's offensive.
Earlier on Friday, an attack on Kryvyi Rih, the hometown of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, resulted in five deaths and the partial destruction of an educational institution. One woman injured in that incident succumbed to her injuries in the hospital the following day.
In the wake of the attacks, President Zelenskyy took to social media to express his outrage, stating that those who support the Russian state in the ongoing conflict must be held accountable for their actions.
Since the onset of its nearly three-year invasion of Ukraine, Russia has frequently targeted cities and towns well beyond the front lines, focusing on critical infrastructure in its military strategy.
