Aerial Operations Target Expansion of LA Palisades Wildfire

Sun 12th Jan, 2025

In a concerted effort to control the eastward progression of the Palisades wildfire, aerial firefighting teams deployed water and fire retardant over steep hillsides in Los Angeles on Saturday. Ground crews also intensified their efforts as forecasts warned of potential wind gusts reaching 70 miles per hour, which could exacerbate the situation.

According to officials, the Palisades Fire has expanded by an additional 1,000 acres over the last day, leading to further destruction of homes. Cal Fire spokesperson Todd Hopkins reported that containment efforts have managed to secure 11% of the fire, which has now burned over 22,000 acres (approximately 8,900 hectares).

The blaze has encroached into the Mandeville Canyon neighborhood and poses a threat to the affluent Brentwood area, as well as the San Fernando Valley. It is also inching closer to the north-south 405 freeway.

The National Weather Service issued warnings about worsening Santa Ana winds expected to intensify Saturday night into Sunday morning, with another wave anticipated from late Monday through Tuesday. These winds could bring sustained speeds of up to 30 mph and gusts up to 70 mph.

"We are facing a prolonged period of critical fire weather conditions through Wednesday," stated an NWS meteorologist. Relief from these conditions is expected by Thursday.

Evacuation orders in the Los Angeles area currently affect around 153,000 residents, putting approximately 57,000 structures at risk. An additional 166,000 residents have been issued warnings regarding potential evacuation.

In positive news, efforts to restore electrical power to affected neighborhoods are making headway. Southern California Edison CEO announced that the number of customers without power has decreased to about 50,000, down from over half a million.

As state and local officials confront the most severe cluster of fires in Los Angeles history, federal resources are also mobilizing. President Biden has been in contact with local officials to discuss ongoing efforts, and a major disaster declaration has been issued, enabling federal assistance through FEMA.

FEMA representatives are present at various locations, including the Pasadena Convention Center, aiding residents in navigating the application process for disaster relief funds. The assistance may include financial support for home repairs and the replacement of lost items such as food or medication.

Los Angeles County Sheriff mentioned the deployment of search and rescue teams to assist in locating missing persons and reuniting families.

The series of wildfires in Los Angeles County has resulted in the tragic loss of at least 13 lives and the destruction of over 12,000 structures. Furthermore, 13 individuals are currently unaccounted for, and the toll is likely to rise as firefighters conduct thorough searches.

Despite a brief reduction in wind intensity, the Palisades Fire is now spreading in a new direction due to changing wind patterns. This fire is noted to be the most devastating in the history of Los Angeles, having reduced entire neighborhoods to ashes.

Before the recent flare-up, firefighters reported progress in controlling both the Palisades Fire and the Eaton Fire, which has also been burning uncontrollably. At present, the Palisades Fire is approximately 11% contained, while the Eaton Fire is 15% contained.

The combined area affected by these fires exceeds 36,000 acres (14,500 hectares), significantly impacting communities across the region.

In the wake of the fires, local officials have declared a public health emergency due to the hazardous smoke that has enveloped the city. Residents returning to their neighborhoods have encountered devastating scenes, with many homes reduced to rubble.

As recovery efforts begin, the estimated economic toll from these wildfires is projected to be between $135 billion and $150 billion, prompting concerns about rising insurance costs and the allocation of recovery resources.

Law enforcement has cautioned residents to adhere to curfews to maintain safety, as there have been instances of burglary and looting amid the chaos.
