Ukrainian Diplomat Calls for Stronger Security Commitments Beyond NATO-Style Guarantees

In response to the increasing trend of solo night shifts at convenience stores, Seven-Eleven Japan Co. has announced plans to bolster security protocols at its outlets. This initiative comes amidst a severe labor shortage that has compelled many stores to operate with minimal staff during late-night hours.
The new security framework will enable employees to manage store access remotely. When a sensor detects the presence of a customer at the entrance, staff will use a remote control to grant entry. Sources indicate that this system is currently being tested in select locations and is expected to roll out to more stores by May.
As convenience stores across the nation grapple with a persistent shortage of workers coupled with escalating wage costs, many establishments are now frequently managed by just one or two employees during certain shifts. This trend raises concerns about safety, as these solitary workers may be more vulnerable to incidents such as theft, assault, or emergencies like natural disasters and sudden health issues.
To counteract potential risks, Seven-Eleven plans to introduce physical barriers at cash registers, aiming to protect employees from possible acts of violence. The introduction of these measures highlights the growing social concerns regarding the welfare of workers in the service sector, where solo operations have become increasingly common.
In recent years, the issue of single-person operations in convenience stores has emerged as a significant challenge. Many franchise owners, including those of popular beef bowl chain Sukiya, have been forced to reduce operating hours in response to growing worries about the safety and well-being of their employees.
The convenience store industry, traditionally known for its 24-hour operations, faces a unique dilemma as many owners find themselves managing their stores alone during off-peak hours. Even with the implementation of the new security measures, Seven-Eleven intends to restrict the hours for one-person operations to a window from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.
The ongoing challenges within the industry have prompted a reevaluation of operational strategies, particularly in how to ensure both profitability and employee safety. As the labor market continues to evolve, the adoption of innovative security solutions may become increasingly vital for the long-term sustainability of convenience stores.
